Increasing safety of the traffic system by digitizing law

Project kickoff ESTRAL

Road traffic has changed considerably in recent decades. Traffic regulations have become increasingly complex and their addressees, i.e. the group of road users, more and more diverse. In addition, the possibilities of digitalization allow new approaches to ultimately also increase traffic safety.

The project ESTRAL (Ecological and Safe TRAffic systems by digitizing Law) shows ways how the legally binding digital creation of traffic regulations can be announced via digital channels in addition to the usual announcement via traffic signs and road markings. In this way, secured information should also be able to be used in digital services (for example, in apps), as well as in automated driving functions of modern vehicles.

ESTRAL is being worked on by an interdisciplinary project consortium led by PRISMA solutions. The partners are ASFINAG, FH Oberösterreich, Kuratorium für Verkehrssicherheit (KfV), Land Niederösterreich, Salzburg Research, Sigmund Freud PrivatUniversität (SFU), and Verkehrsauskunft Österreich (VAO). The consortium stands for building bridges between law and technology in road traffic.

ESTRAL was commissioned as an R&D service on Zero Emission Mobility as part of the Climate and Energy Fund's "Digital Transformation in Mobility 2022" call for proposals and is funded by the Ministry of Climate Protection (BMK). Following the successful project launch in September, the project, which is scheduled to run for a total of 18 months, is now in the start-up phase. Interim results will be shared with relevant stakeholders on an ongoing basis in order to ensure the feasibility of the concepts developed.
